WALL OF FAME

45 seconds: Short Bus-sponsored Rich Maile came down from Sacramento to beat Tony Manzella (Helens Sub) in single speed. Rich was within one minute of the start, but not nearly enough. Rich is now out of the saddle, and hammering on the singletrack just below DH start.

Pros in transition: Friday’s downhill practice saw Enin Jayo at top of the hill. Enin rode for another bike from Santa Cruz to race in a highly competitive Semipro class. Enin finished 7 seconds behind Michael Forests’ winning time.

Vet attack: Chuck Valenzuela, a sponsor of KHS, was 40 years old and was 3rd oldest Semipro rider. Mitch Tolson (43 years old) was the top rider in his age group and had the fastest descent with the vets. Chuck, 35th overall, takes a short break after clearing the first section of rock.

Wrecking crew: MBAs’ Ed Arnet takes to the new singletrack that runs off the old asphalt climb. Ed, a 45-49 Exp used the National to spend more time on our RacerX test bed. A long weekend was a challenge for him, with a 4th place in the marathon, 4th at the Super D and 7th in cross-country. The Titus just crossed the 150-hour mark.

Urban Assault National: Experts roar past 500 additional Fontana homes. Dermot Carrol (45–49; Amgen) was third fastest, and the only expert to ride in the same time as Scott Fifield and National XC.

Silt surfing: Deep, powdery ruts had formed on the steeper descents by the time the experts reached the XC course. This one is located just below Sandbag Hill. This one was immediately after a moderately long grind and the rut provided no relief. Many chose to tiptoe instead of putting their feet up.

Manuel Prado is now the Underdog. This long-standing Sho-Air rider won a popular victory in Semipro XC Friday afternoons. His

It’s possible: Charles Ducsay from Southridge Park, riding for Team PossAbilities gets far back after clearing rocks at the top. Charles finished 3rd in 50+ Beginner class. Greg Dion (Real Bicycle) won the race, who came from Pleasanton, CA.

Expert start: Scott Fifield (1178, 40-44), Bob Kmetz (505; 5th 40–44), Johnny OMara (967), 45-49), and Davey Moore (1087) (second 40–44). Scott and Johnny rode together, and shared the fastest expert times (respectively).

Couldve, shouldve: Jax/Cytomax-sponsored Ty Kady was running away with his first Semipro win in as many NMBS tries, but blew halfway through the final lap. He managed to keep it going to finish fifth. Ty is an ex-Suzuki-supported amateur motocrosser.
