Urban Cyclocross Week 8 in Palos Verdes was the conclusion of the 4-race Urban CX. A combination of recent rainstorms and sunny skies brought perfect course conditions. There was also a surprise, as a new dismount was made through the creek, where an old bridge had been removed. Over 170 riders charged around the fast course, which also included the InCycle Hell Hill run.

The largest Elite Mens A field was ever present, but the other riders couldn’t match National Champion Mark Noble (Amgen Cycling), who rode away with the field right from the start to win. Tony Smith (Celo Pacific), a fixed-gear single-speed phenom who won the race earlier in the day, finished second, with John Behrens finishing third. The Elite Womens race saw Dorothy Wong (Kelly Bike Co.) win her sixth victory over Pro MTB rivals Carolyn Popovic, Evomo, and Amy Bowen (Platinum Performance), both of whom were new to the series.

Brittney VanVleet, National MTB Champion (KHS/Swamis), continues to be undefeated with another win in Junior Women’s race leading Kendall Ryan(Scaryfast), by only 2 points. Didier Jordain, Karl Strauss/SDBC, was first in the Junior Men 18+under class. Encore Cycling was in great form at the Mens B event. Jason Vorell led the way, with Jason Jordain taking third. Jason Lowetzs (PAA/Merrill Lynch) defeated Michael Lilly (Shoreline Cycles), the top contender in the Mens C race. Heidi Kanayan (3Pines/Bear Valley Bikes/661) wins the Womens B field. She is aiming for the overall series title. It was a tight race between Beth Gentry (Pro Cyclery), and Lisa Vorell (Encore).

Robert Weyman (Century Road Club), who won his first Masters race in the 30+, Keith Neu (PAA/Merrill Lynch), the 40+, and Jonathan Livesay (PAA/Merrill Lynch), the 50+. Bob Llamas (PAA/Merill Lynch), winner of the Urban CX 55+, was able to roll away for victory over Charles Anderson (Lightning Velo) and Steve Brown (Covina Vale).

The Trek bicycle drawing was the highlight of the day. Proceeds from the Trek bike drawing will benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation, part of the Peleton Project. Russ Fortin from San Pedro, a beginner cyclocrosser and resident of San Pedro, was selected as the lucky winner. The Trek XO-1 cyclocross bicycle was courtesy SoCalCX Series Sponsor Trek, and Lemond Bicycles. The local Trek dealer, San Pedro’s Bike Palace, will be happy to see that this customer is now returning to the shop on a regular basis. Peninsula Cycle Club is very grateful for hosting the race.

The Urban Cyclocross TM Single Speed Series, which has been expanded to five races, will end in Irvine on Saturday December 3rd at the Capital Choice/Shimano California State Cyclocross Champions. This championships is also part of SoCalCyclocross Series. Racers continue to earn points towards the overall series.
