KHS XC104

161 kg
Rear wheel travel 9 cm
KHS, 393-2955
Maxi test: July 2006

Highlights: The bike is very affordable. The coil suspension adjusts easily and the semi-active linkage pedals work extremely well. Rapidfire triggers shift 8-speed Alivio/Truvativ transmission more efficiently than bikes costing more. Many riders would sacrifice 5 beats of their threshold in order to have shifting as smooth as the XC-104. We were surprised by the Winzip disc brakes. These are some of the most modulating mechanical discs available. They also have wavy-rotors.

Best quote: We wish the bike had an 11-34 eight speed cassette instead of the 11.-30. You’ll need to use the lowest gear possible because this bike is heavy.

The bottom line is that this bike is for beginners. Your first year of riding will be dedicated to learning and perfecting your skills. A lightweight climbing bike is not necessary. This might not be the type or riding you want. This bike is great for lift riding. It can go down hills without breaking. You can do anything you want with it and you will be the rider you’re meant to become.
